Your very own handwritten font that works in videoscribe…

If you are in the market for animated explainer videos uk or are in the process of creating one, then getting the right font, or even creating your own font is a vital step in keeping your video engaging.

After downloading all kinds of free fonts over the years, and using them in videoscribe to create our whiteboard explainer animations, I finally decided it was time to try and make my own font.

I searched the Internet and quickly found a free online service.

By downloading a simple template from www.myscriptfont.com I was able to quickly and easily create my own handwritten font that works great in videoscribe and adobe illustrator.

I did a quick test in videoscribe and it worked really well.

(The whole effect seems to have come out much better than I had hoped for, because I am quite a messy writer, proven by the fact that on a couple of my most recent whiteboard animations I had to re write some of my text and labels so that it was legible! )

NOT all animated explainer videos uk, are created equally though!

And while one video style may yield earth shattering results for one business, it may be a complete dud for your business. If different types of  styles have been swirling around your head and have left you confused then you may need to do some basic research to get the right look for your business.

This is one of my new favourite fonts! Luckily some of my clients prefer my hand written font, but I love the Denne sketchy font.  Here is another fantastic font that you can use in a videoscribe or explainer videos uk, i love it.

The primary key to an effective video is to select the video style that best fits your business marketing objectives and target audience.

The first thing to realize is that every font has its own pros and cons. Some are more straightforward, some are more creative, and some are more youthful. In this way, some styles are more appropriate for different industries than others.
The pros of whiteboard videos is that they are very to the point, and communicate information in a simple and effective way. The font or fonts used in the video can make or break it. You will need to consider who your target audience is and what they will feel most at home reading. A whiteboard animation can be highly engaging and spark curiosity in viewers, and the font you choose is an integral part of the video. They can even be inverted to look like a blackboard video and this makes the font really stand out nicely.

Although these videos are limited in the amount of color and animation they contain, by using carefully selected coloured fonts can really improve your video, and make it stand out . If you’re looking to convey your information in a clear and effective way you can look read up on the history of sketch notes or visual note taking. I call them the ‘grandfather’ of animated explainer videos uk, and a good sketch note had a successful blend of cool looking fonts and nice cartoons or doodles.

Contraception Chatbot for Women in Southeast Asia

At Russlaw.co.uk  our assignments are usually for medical education and training or sales/promotion purposes.

Recently, however, we completed a project that was a little unusual, and at the time didn’t realise the significance of it. We were approached by a Southeast Asia contact to supply a powtoon explainer video promoting a confidential chatbot service about contraception for women.

screenshot of the powtoon animation

The chatbot service

The user could download an app. This would enable instant access to a trusted advisor who would give strictly confidential advice on contraception and OC pills. The user could also be guided to a Participating Pharmacist for skilled counselling and advice. There were plans to extend this into a comprehensive website. This chatbot and many others are hosted under the Beyer umbrella. There is an extensive use of AI and there is no doubt that it will be introduced into this contraception chatbot covering the most commonly asked questions.

The benefits of the contraception chatbot

The main value of the service, apart from the obvious information and education, is that it allows women to talk freely and safely about contraception without any religious or cultural constraints.

Women’s rights in Southeast Asia

In view of the current drive for women’s rights: equal pay, more representation at senior levels, ‘Me Too’ etc.; is this contraception chatbot the beginning of a women’s emancipation movement in Southeast Asia, or have we had a glimpse of an established drive demanding rights for women in the region?

In a world where technology is a part of our daily lives and the influx of information can feel overwhelming at times, it is vital to be able to access current, concise and accurate information. This is paramount when it comes to healthcare and anyone involved in the medical profession, as well as patients and their families. Clear, precise communication will promote better understanding and quicker resolutions for doctors, nurses and other medical professionals and the patients who seek their help. Medical Whiteboard Animation videos can provide the perfect medium for explaining complicated medical concepts, describing various illnesses and diseases, elaborating different treatments available, or even promoting a healthy lifestyle that will ultimately lead to avoiding life-threatening afflictions.

How can Whiteboard Animation be used by the medical community? What can be accomplished by creating medical whiteboard animations?

It is common knowledge doctors and nurses undergo many years of learning and training, before actually becoming full-fledged medical professionals who get to help patients. Their intimate medical mastery in their respective field involves a plethora of medical terms that might be difficult to come to terms with for most patients, especially when they find themselves the recipients of bad news. Whiteboard Animations can provide a great opportunity for better patient outreach and filling the communication gap. Doctors could have patients watch a simple animation when talking about their affliction, thus enabling patients to emotionally and physically manage the news easier and also make the road ahead clearer.

3 key points of a whiteboard animation

But that is not the only area medical whiteboard animations can help, as the medical field is in constant motion and evolution, with medical breakthroughs and scientific research always modifying the limits of understanding and changing paradigms on a regular basis; whiteboard animations can play a significant role in educating the new generations of medical professionals, as well as informing the ones already serving the general public. The videos can offer a wealth of information in a timely fashion to professionals whose time is a hot commodity. In healthcare, education is important, as with well prepared medical staff, lives are saved daily, hospitals are protected, and employees are given needed skills in order to support and serve patients most efficiently.

What are the attributes of a useful Medical whiteboard animation?

Whiteboard animation videos can present the information in a clear manner, detailing concepts by offering concise definitions, illustrated with colourful graphics, highlighting what is important and what needs to be retained, as it will be written, drawn and spoken at the same time. The information presented can be as simple or as complex as required by the ultimate recipients: patients of any age, or medical professionals and supporting staff. The animation can take any form to accommodate the concept or concepts explained, i.e. step-by-step instructions of “how to”, defining the illness/disease, categorization of symptoms, etc.

Beat banner blindess with explainer videos

Studies have shown that only a small number of visitors recalled the last display ad they saw and the company or product it promoted. Most users just dont click on banner ads and they just aren’t effective any more. This article aims to explain why this has happened, and how an explainer video can do the job for you instead.

pazuju girl in explainer video

Infolinks is an interesting company that are going to study the psychology of this banner blindness over the course of the year and welcomes participation from the industry.

The infamous banner ad has been used for almost twenty years now, but it has little to show for itself. People find they are usually unimaginative and also intrusive, but most website visitors just ignore them completely. On top of all this research, the click-through rate of banner ads is only around 0.1 percent, or less. Did you know that as many as half of clicks on mobile banner ads are accidental! Industry experts agree: the banner ad is about the worst of what online advertising can offer, and it is time to think differently.

Another difficult truth for advertisers is that Google Adwords are becoming much less effective, and starting to suffer the same fate as the banner ad. Website visitors have started ignoring, or avoiding these ads that appear at the top of a Google Search and instead looking directly to where they can find the most organic or ‘honest’ results. These ‘honest’ results are just underneath the paid ads and are there because they were selected organically by googles incredibly sophisticated algorithm. The Mighty Google Algorithm is not actually just a set of ranking factors, but more of a collection of protocols, applications, operating systems, and databases. The main ones are nicknamed Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird and Pigeon, and if you are involved in SEO or search engine optimization or blogging you have most likely heard of them.
Most people don’t know it but almost every day, Google introduces changes to its powerful ranking algorithm. Some are just small tweaks; but others can seriously shake up the search engine results.

There is another way that has been proven to work.
Explainer videos

Successful explainer videos take careful planning but can bear banner blindness. If you do it right the rewards will be abundant and generate a good ROI.
Digital marketers must adapt accordingly to capitalize on the consumer mindset that is driving this change.
Explainer videos are videos that explains a concept, a product, a function, or maybe a process. When best they do this in a fun and engaging way. Where hundreds of words might have been needed in the past to explain a concept, a 30-60 second video could do it better.
Key factors to a good explainer video are to address the viewers pain, and then present the solution in a fun and engaging way.
A simple style usually works best.

The largest group of your website visitors will usually be visual Learners. They love anything visual, and a fresh animation that will make them laugh is the perfect way to engage them and keep them on your site. They will happily watch your video, and remember much more of your information this way. If it was any good, then chances are they will tell others about it.

Auditory learners the next highest volume of visitors your website will get. The good news is an explainer video will still work perfectly. With a strong script and a professional voice over the Auditory learners will still get the key takeaways you want them to.

3 good reasons to have a whiteboard animation on your website

Whiteboard animations Grab your visitors attention, which means you get to deliver the perfect sales pitch every time someone finds your website

It has taken a few years, but Video is now all over the internet. You can’t avoid it. Animated videos such as powtoons, videoscribes or other Whiteboard videos are a really fun way to tell a story or get a message across. The cartoon style of these videos makes them a surprisingly clever method for delivering important information to your site visitors. They have been proven to draw people in and hold their attention for the entire length of the video. Thanks to sites like youtube and vimeo, you can add a video to your website in minutes.

Many of my clients come to me with a very complex message that they need to get across to their web visitors quickly and easily. This is where the whiteboard video format comes in. By adding some humour to sensitive or complex subjects the message is transformed and becomes so much easier to deliver.

This brings me to my first reason you should have a whiteboard video on your website.

REASON 1: You can get people to listen to a complex message if you deliver it as an animated whiteboard video.

Here is a link to a wonderful FREE book created by the powtoon scientists that is jam-packed with brilliant information about creating animated videos.
Now you have got your website visitors to listen to your message you can pat yourself on the back and perhaps even celebrate… but there is something else that needs to happen for this whole process to have been a success. You need your visitors to REMEMBER what they saw after they have seen your message.
This brings us to the second reason on the list. The simple fact is that people remember whiteboard videos if they are done well.

REASON 2: People are much more likely to remember your message if it is visual

SO now you have managed to get people to listen to you, and there is a really good chance that if you asked them about what they saw the next day, they would be able to tell you. The third reason on the list is where it really starts to get fun. Have you ever seen a new business open up in your local area? If you walk past on the grand opening day you may well see people in brightly dressed costume and funny hats, probably handing out information. Someone might be juggling while riding around on a unicycle. Those opening days are easy to remember, aren’t they? and they are even harder to forget! You were probably telling friends and family about it the next day.

Whimpy used to have a poor guy dressed up as a hamburger outside their restaurant the whole day, handing out flyers and promotions. We all still remember him, don’t we!
The marketing specialists behind those companies knew how to get noticed and get people talking about them.

REASON 3: Having a whiteboard animation on your site will get you noticed.

Hopefully, I have made my point. But just in case you still aren’t convinced, can sign up for a free trial of videoscribe. I promise you won’t regret it.

A doodle video is great news for cartoonists and illustrators

A doodle video is great news for cartoonists and illustrators

In recent years the great news for doodlers and cartoonists has been the increasing ease of producing a simple but effective whiteboard animation with the assistance of computer technology. We have seen how effective this tech has been in the film industry, and the great news is that it is also working for artists everywhere.
Many people still don’t know what a whiteboard animation is though. The term explainer video or video presentation is becoming more common. A doodle animation as they are often called relies on simplicity and usually visual humour to convey the message. People love fast moving graphics presented in a fun style.

So when you see these videos, the key to them is that the simpler the visuals are, the less effort your brain will need to process the image and make sense of it.

explainer video still of how the brain reacts to your life decisions

There are a few other important factors to a doodle video though. Perhaps the most important one is that these videos are not age specific or gender specific. They are perfect for viewers ranging from millennials to silver surfers.
The tech industry loves a doodle video and appreciates their power for just these reasons. They appreciate that their messages or services are often complex and hard to explain. If they can order a low cost but highly effective video that can do the explaining for them then they are quids in.

If we think about it we all learnt the incredible power of the whiteboard technique at school. When the teacher wrote or drew something on a whiteboard we knew we were about to received some useful information.

A doodle animation has proved itself without doubt to be the most versatile of the video presentation techniques. When done right, they will be brimming with entertaining drawings that are not limited by the usual stock image restrictions. The artist can draw anything he wants, and connect it up to all of the other images in the doodle video. Some of the best ones have a small amount of colour that reflects the clients branding.

Didn’t learn a second language as a kid? No worries. Here’s why you might want to learn one anyway.

Want to get smarter? Would you consider visual note taking, brain mapping, or creating video explainers the same as learning a new language? You might find this interesting…

What does being bilingual really do?

1. It changes the structure of your brain.

Researchers have observed being multilingual can visibly make the neurons and synapses in the brain’s gray matter denser and spur more activity in other regions of the brain when using another language. Basically, it’s a brain workout! and it looks like it is the perfect way to get smarter.

Recent studies have shown that by learning an extra languages is an incredible asset to the cognitive process. It demonostrates how the brains of bilingual humans operate quite differently than those who speak only one language, and these differences offer several mental advantages.

get smarter, get creative

There are huge benefits to gaining knowledge of a foreign language. Many of these attributes are most apparent in bilingual or trilingual people.

It makes you smarter

By communicating in a new language you will improve the capability of your mind by means of challenging it to understand, and negotiate totally new meanings. This new skill helps develop your brain in all kinds of other ways too. That gray matter up there contains all the neuronal cell bodies and stuff that controls your muscles, senses, memory, and — you guessed it — speech. Newer studies show that those slow reaction times and errors on language tests really reflect that the effort of switching between languages is beefing up the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex — the part of your brain that controls problem-solving, switching tasks, and focusing on important stuff while filtering out what’s irrelevant.

You will have better multitasking skills becuase of the way your brain has to work to switch between your known languages.

A much better chace to avoid Alzheimer’s and dementia. Several studies have been conducted on this topic, and the results are consistent. For monolingual adults, the mean age for the first signs of dementia is 71.4. For adults who speak two or more languages, the mean age for those first signs is 75.5.

Your memory will improve

Scholars liken the brain to a muscle, because it functions better with exercise. Learning a language involves memorising rules and vocabulary, which strengthens the mental “muscle.” This exercise improves overall memory.

You will become more perceptive.

Tests revealed that multilingual people are better at observing their surroundingsand were better at focusing on relevant information and editing out the irrelevant.

light bulb showing thought

Improved decision-making skills

Bilinguals are more confident with their choices after thinking it over in the second language and seeing whether their initial conclusions still stand up.

Would you like to sound smarter as well as to get smarter? You will actually improve your English

Speaking a second language will make you more aware of your native language, and the ways it can be structured and manipulated. These skills can make you a more effective communicator and a sharper editor and writer. Language speakers also develop a better ear for listening.

Understanding the storyboard

How important is a storyboard?

Creating a storyboard might sound like a bunch of extra work that you think unnecessary, but it is actually one of the most important stages of your process.

storyboard example for whiteboard vide

We’ve all had experiences in which we have been trying to explanation our vision to someone who just can’t see our vision.

So what is a storyboard?

A storyboard is a visual representation of how your video will unfold, shot by shot in your video. It’s made up of a number of squares with drawings representing each shot, with helpful notes about what’s going on in the scene and it also includes what is being said in the script during that specific shot.

Did you know that a good story artist is always in demand? because a visual aids makes it much easier for you to share and explain your vision to others, which in turn and this makes it so much easier for other people to understand your idea, and will make the entire production process less likely to fail. You’ve heard of Hollywood right? (just kidding) well, every single production they make has a storyboard created first. It helps the director understand his movie, and everyone involved will get a grip on the project much faster than without one.  In fact every single film worth a mention (and many, many others) will always have each scene sketched out.

If you are trying to pitch an idea for an animation, a TV commercial, or a film then you can show other people and clients exactly how your video is going to play out and what it will look like, and the benefits of this kind of clear communication reap endless rewards.

storyboard images example from a russlaw whiteboard video

Even though it can take you some time to create a storyboard, in the long run it will save you from disaster, and will help avoid revisions later.

And finally just make sure it is visually consistent from start to finish.

If you want to see the results then take a look at this whiteboard video I created for the International Nurses day. Every time I create an explainer video I always start with a storyboard.

Making life easier for Videoscribe users, powtoonists and whiteboard animation companies

I think we all know the foundation to every great animated video is a great script. A strong script will get your message across properly, delivering a clear message to your target audience, but unless you can deliver interesting and relevant visuals then your video can still be a failure; even with a good script.

Storyboarding
I was reading through a script the other day, wondering about the best way to visualize some of the key points of the video I was making. Depending on how well you know the subject matter this can be a tough call. It can be a straight forward process, but at other times it can really be challenging, especially when you want your animated video to look original and stand out from the mass of videoscribes, powtoon or whiteboard animations that have recently flooded the internet.

videoscribe

There is an entire skill set related to this, and becoming good at this type of communication takes practice.
I usually brain storm several ideas. Discuss these with my script writer, and my wife (who is an integral part of this process) and then I do some preliminary sketches before I show the client.

Anyone who wants to create an engaging videoscribe, whiteboard animation or powtoon, will be working from a script, and attempting to represent each part of the script in the most interesting and engaging way.

Outside help

I think it would be really useful if there was a website or app dedicated to this.  You would just enter a line of the script and the clever AI would present a series of images that represent the phrase or idea. You can already do this to a certain extent just by doing a google search, but the AI is not aimed at delivering this kind of information and if often not particularly helpful. This new website or service would also use community feedback on which images or ideas worked best – so it would need a voting system to allow users to give their input on what works best for a given keyword, phrase or sentence. The feedback part of what works and what works and what doesn’t would not happen over night, but I think as it grew it would become a really useful tool.  (This would also be a valuable asset for any A.I. system to have, as being able to understand a range of both simple and complex textual concepts and express them visually is an important life skill.)

Your search would return a series of images relating to your keyword phrase or line of script that would give you useful ideas. The search results could be made up of licenced and licence free images that would give the user constructive ideas about how to illustrate his script, but it could also compliment Sparkol’s Community exchange of images by showing any relevant images and giving you the option to buy anything you needed.

Where do we stand at the moment,

At the moment, no software or website exists that I know of that would give useful ideas.

I am gradually learning the art of storyboarding, but for these shorter videoscribe and whiteboard animations the most successful visuals are often a little more abstract than a storyboard created for traditional animations. Yesterday I went for my usual swim, and by the time I had completed a few laps I had some new ideas about the latest storyboard I am working on. Just taking a break can really help. Find a scrap of paper and a pencil and just start scribbling and doodling on it. The ideas will come, and you will improve each time you do it.

Some of my clients want to take a really active part in this process, and it can get really interesting. In situations like this, just remember to keep it fairly simple, and that you should have the final say, as you are the specialist.

Please let me know in the comments how you create your storyboards for your videoscribe, powtoon or whiteboard animation, and how you work out how you will visualize it.
